The Super 8 is a highly customizable, rack mount, small footprint mixer system.

The system includes an input module cage and output cage.

The 4RU input module cage houses 16 input cards. Up to 6 cages can be summed together for 96 inputs.

There are 11 busses in the input cage. These are typically set up as five mono auxes, two stereo busses and a solo buss.

The 4RU output cage houses twelve buss/output amps and a set of cards for control room monitoring.

The mixer employs a mixture of passive loss (voltage summing), and current summing.

As with all of our new product, this system uses our universal opamp footprint

Input Module Controls

Input channel front panel     The first knob, marked "Level," sets the input level for the channel

The switch under the first knob inverts the polarity of the signal ("Phase")

The next four knobs, marked 1-4, control the level sent to Aux sends 1-4

Between the Aux 1 and 2 knobs there is a tricolor LED that indicates signal level

Just under the LED is a recessed trimmer for calibrating the input control

Between the Aux 3 and 4 knobs is a recessed trimmer for calibrating the buss level

The toggle switch marked "A" located under Aux 4 sends the channel to Buss A or not

The next knob either controls Aux 5 or serves as the channel fader if no external fader is connected

The toggle switch marked "B" under Aux 5 / channel fader sends the channel to Buss B or not

The last knob, marked "Pan," variably assigns the channel to the Left or Right of the selected Buss(es)

Mute / Solo Panel (optional) - This 1RU panel holds 16 channels of illuminated Mute and Solo buttons

Fader Panel (optional) - This 4RU panel holds 16 100mm channel faders

Optional Input Module Controls
  • Aux push mutes - each Aux send knob also is a momentary button that mutes and unmutes the Aux send; great for dub style mixes where you want to "play" the Aux mutes
  • Mic / Line input (only available together with transformer option, see below) - the Level knob is also a button that switches the input from Mic to Line level

Logic Module Controls

Input Logic module front panel     The Solo LED illuminates when any of the channels is soloed

The toggle switch labelled "Solo Safe / Cut" selects one of two channel solo modes:
  • Safe Mode: only the soloed channel(s) are heard in the control room, but the main mix is unchanged
  • Destructive Mode: all non-soloed are muted in the control room and main mix
The momentary button labelled "Solo Clear" un-soloes all channels

Global Aux Pre / Post switching (optional) - The five toggle switches labelled "Pre / Post" switch each of the Aux sends to be pre or post fader level for all channels

Input Module Components

Input module side view     Base Configuration Features:
  • Differential electronically balanced input
  • Input Level control and Calibration trimmer
  • Polarity ("Phase") switch via sealed relay
  • Tri-color LED indicates signal present (green), 10db below clipping (yellow), and clipping (red) at a glance
  • Unique pan circuit provides 91 db of channel seperation, eliminating the need for hard L/R assigns
  • Unbalanced direct out on each channel, IC balanced output optional
  • Aux sends set pre or post fader on each card with jumpers
  • Burr Brown OPA134 series opamps used for all signal path amplifiers and buffers
  • All ICs fitted in high reliability machined-pin sockets for ease of service

Input module side view     Optional discrete signal path:
  • Differential input uses our KDJ3 discrete Class A opamp
  • Pan and Fader buffers use our RLA2 discrete Class A emitter follower
  • Summing amp (where needed) uses our KDJ3 discrete Class A opamp
  • Post-fader output amp uses our KDJ4 discrete Class AB opamp
  • All discrete modules are socketed; DIP8 sockets are also provided for ease of service
  • The only ICs used are for logic

Input module side view     Fully Loaded Configuration:
  • Discrete Signal Path as above
  • Transformer Input
  • Input switchable Mic / Line
Pressing the Level knob actuates relays that change the configuration of the gain stage and transformer from Mic to Line level
  • Aux send Pre / Post switching globally from Logic module via relay
  • Aux send push mutes
Pressing each Aux send knob switches a relay, muting that channel's Aux send

Master Section
The Aux/Buss and Control Room master section panels can be mounted together horizontally on the front of the 4RU output cage, or remote mounted seperately in a console center section.

The large green button swaps the left and right channels
The large blue button sums the left and right channels to mono on both outputs
The two large red buttons mute the left and the right channels
The green knob in the upper right corner adjusts the control room speaker level
The small red button just below turns the speaker output on and off
The black knob just below adjusts the solo buss level
The small red light below that indicates the solo buss is active
The silver toggle switch to the left of the solo knob sets the speaker mode
  • Switched left, turning the headphones on mutes the control room speaker output
  • Switched right, turning the headphones on has no effect on the speaker output
The four buttons below the speaker mode toggle select one of four speaker pairs
The yellow knob on the right adjusts the headphone level
The small red button below that turns the headphones output on and off
The bottom most black knob on the right adjusts the talkback level
